Do blog comments work for link-building? Unless you have a time machine, nope.

Link Building

It’s funny, every once and awhile a comment slips by on my blog that doesn’t make much sense and links back to a website that also doesn’t seem related or relevant to the content in the post. That’s when I realize, ah – this is just someone who thinks they are doing some sneaky SEO when they’re really doing nothing at all.

Earlier today Search Engine Journal published an article helping to put this ancient SEO technique to rest once and for all.

Blog comments were a popular link building tactic many years ago.

You might come across lots of older information that suggests using this tactic because it once worked extremely well.

Please hear me when I say this tactic used to work.

It does not anymore – and hasn’t for a long time.(Source – Search Engine Journal)

Now just to be clear, this doesn’t mean that links coming back to your site from a blog won’t do any good, those are great…it’s throwing links in the comment section that have gone the way of the dodo.

On that note, if you do want to build backlinks through blogs, make sure you’re actually reaching out to a blog that is related to what you do. I get emails all the time from people who want me to link back to them and they sell something completely unrelated to my blog. While most bloggers won’t just put a link to your site on their blog, if it’s something related, and your product and service does turn out to be something that would be helpful to their readers, it just might happen.

So one more time, repeat after me, adding a link to your site in the comment section of a blog is not SEO, unless of course you build a time machine and go back to a time when it was…if you do that, let me know, I have some sports bets to place!
