I hope everyone is having a great weekend, this week flew-by and tonight is our Christmas Tree decorating spectacular so I’ll keep this short and sweet. I’ve really enjoyed doing these Saturday posts, helps center myself a bit and focus on what I learned the previous week. If you ever try this exercise and find you can’t come-up with anything then you need to start opening your mind and learning new things. Just about every week I try new services, read about new techniques, and experiment – and in this industry it’s all a lot of fun 🙂
This week I have three main lessons:
- If you’re going to build a directory start with an established system like PHPMyDirectory. This is my first foray into building a directory site and I initially started by building my own directory system. I quickly realized that other people have done the work of building sophisticated directory systems. Rather than re-creating the wheel why not go with an established system? This had an immediate impact on how efficiently we could add stores, upgrade listings, etc. I guess the lesson here is a simple one, don’t re-create the wheel.
- The NNNN.com market could be one of the biggest opportunities that nobody but my friend Shane are talking about. This week I read a great post on Shane’s blog about NNNN.com and spent some time researching past sales and getting familiar with 4.cn. Totally new market for me and I’m learning every day!
- There is nothing more satisfying than making the person you love feel like the most important person in the world. It was Daina’s Birthday this week and I surprised her by flying her best friend out from Toronto and doing everything I could possibly think of to make this the best Birthday ever. It really turned-out even better than I had imagined and it’s always great when a plan comes together! Heck I love Domaining but there’s nothing more satisfying than how I feel right now.
Okay now back to decorating the tree, I’ll make sure to share a picture with all of you once we’re done.
As always feel free to comment and share what you learned this week!
