Whether you think the coming wave of new gTLDs is the greatest thing since sliced bread, or if you think they’re going to ruin the Internet world forever, I want to ask you one question. Putting your differences aside, let’s bring both sides together and look as businesspeople, at the potential of a new gTLD that takes off.
Of course if I’m going to ask the question I also have to share my own pick and the reasons why. If I could run one gTLD it would be .app and here’s why. The smartphone has taken-off, there’s not debate about that, and all the programs on a smartphone are called Apps and most connect directly to the net. Everyone likes a nice simple app name like Fresh or Find or Watermelon, but not all app-makers want to shell out hundreds of thousands (or millions) of dollars to get one.
Now let me be clear. I’m not saying that one-word .COMs are going to be any less valuable, in fact I think they will go up in price over the next two years but I’ll save that for a different post. What I do think is that .app could become the go-to TLD for app-makers and since there are an insane amount of apps out there and many more coming I think there’s a lot of money to be made with this TLD.
There, now you know my top pick, if you could run one gTLD what would it be and why?
